I wanted to ditch the Psychology Class, but I knew the Dean would probably be busy until I got out of class. So, it was over to the class, and I paid as much attention as I could. Naturally, the class seemed to drag on forever today. When we were finally released, I was out of there like a shot. Mrs. Humboldt looked at her watch when I entered the office. "You certainly didn't waste any time today, Mr Sawyer." "No, I didn't. I'm curious to know if I can stop watching over my shoulder 24/7." "Dean Evans should be with you in just a few minutes." I sat myself down to wait. Much to my surprise, Bob Watson walked into the office. "Have a seat Mr Watson." "Any idea what's up, Dennis?" "If I had to guess? I'd say a finish to this whole mess I've been in, and you're here to make sure the story gets told right, or not at all." The corridor door opened again a few minutes later, and Mr Adams walked in. Mrs. Humboldt went into the inner office and returned quickly. "You may all go in now." "Well, gentlemen, I'm sure you are all curious as to why you've been called here. I won't keep you in suspense. It's no secret the troubles you Mr Sawyer, and you Professor Adams have been having and you Mr Watson have been keeping a close eye on. Well, I can tell you all that,at least for the time being, things have been concluded." "And the particulars Dean Evans?" "Yes, well Mr Watson, you may certainly have the particulars, but strictly off the record. Seems Mr Hasting and Mr Grandise became aware of the...rivalry between Mr Sawyer and Professor Adams due to your reporting last year. They realized that their reasons for things being as they were could be pitted against each other. Let me explain that a bit. Professor Adams, you didn't recognize the name of Mr Hastings, but his father seems to have lost everything based on your business advice. He was holding you responsible for not being able to attend a journalism school with a higher reputation because of it. Mr. Sawyer, you know why Mr Grandise had a beef with you, but so that everyone knows, Mr Sawyer was responsible, at least in part, for having Mr Grandise's step brother incarcerated on drug charges. Said stepbrother subsequently passed while in prison. Regardless, they saw a way to use you against each other so that you might not see them coming for you. They are both in custody of the police at this point on drug charges and have both been dismissed from this college. Now, that did happen earlier last week. The reason nothing was said at the time was that they were cooperating with the police. I'm sure you noticed an uptick in the security forces activities the last day or so as well as the police in town. They have been rounding up as many of a drug ring that has been operating since the term started. There wasn't any information released before so that people didn't scurry away." Bob didn't look happy that this was all off the record, which meant he couldn't use a word of it for publication. Professor Adams simply sat there and processed the information. "So, that should put an end to this particular problem, at least for a while?" "I should think so Mr Sawyer, for more than a while I should think. Even with their cooperation I don't believe we'll be hearing from either gemtleman for several years." "No offensive Dean Evans, but we know from experience just because someone is behind bars doesn't mean they can't still cause us trouble." "Yes, I suppose we did have ample evidence of that your Freshman year. But I should think you do have some room to breathe easier." "For a few weeks at least sir." "Well, gentlemen, I do believe that wraps things up for today. Enjoy your weekend." We all filed out of the Deans office. "Mr Sawyer, a moment if you please." Bob recognized that tome from Professor Adams and took off. "Seems I have misjudged you Mr Sawyer. I'd like to offer my apologies." "Apology accepted Professor Adams. Let's both of us just rack it up to life experience." I offered him my hand and we shook. I headed back to my car. Just because Dean Evans thought things were wrapped up didn't stop me from doing my once around of the car. It was habit now. Once done I got in and headed to the apartment. I didn't get anything started for supper. It being Friday night and no scheduled practice for tomorrow I felt like going out to eat. Karl rolled in at about is usual time and when he saw that I didn't have anything started for supper just looked at me. I explained the whole meeting to him. "Well that's got to be weight off. Where to tonight?" "We haven't been to Riskins since we got back." "Sounds like a plan. Let's get some better clothes on then." We both went in to change. The temptation was there to spend some time together, but if we did that, we'd never get out to supper. We got out to Riskins, and even on a Friday night were able to get right in. Our meal was great as usual and uninterrupted. Karl and I headed for the car and did the once around before we headed back to the apartment. Saturday morning dawned nice and bright so it was over to campus for our regular morning routine. When we rounded the corner of Cochrane Hall the guys were al waiting on us. It was Adien who was the sharp-eyed one today. "Dennis, you're almost smiling. What's happened?" "I can't go into the particulars, but it seems my problems, at least for the time being, have been seen to." "So no more worry about something happening in the locker room?" "Not that I will likely have anything to do with Ed." "Well that should make things a lot better. People stopped showing up to work out on Tuesday and Thursdays there for a while." "I did notice. Well let's get this in gear. I want to get back and get my bookwork done this morning." "Why the hurry Den?" "Because my brothers are going to be in a competition this weekend and I'm going to be able to stream it. First time I'll get to see them ride other than simply for pleasure." "Think they have a chance of winning?" "There's always a chance Cam. I've never watched one of these things before so I really don't have any idea if they're any good or not. It's a national show, so they have to have some kind of knack for it." "For a national show I should certainly hope so." "Well. Let's get it in gear." Our laps were run without incident, and Karl and I made our way back to the apartment. We cleaned up and had breakfast. Karl went to work on school stuff while I got set up to watch the horse show. There hadn't been a schedule posted before on the website. Now there was one and the junior division events didn't take place until a little later. I watched anyway to see what was happening, as I had no idea what this sport involved. The first event was dressage. The commentator must have known there would be some "first timers" watching. "For those of you new to the sport, dressage is defined as a form of horse riding that emphasizes the horse and riders harmony, developing skills such as suppleness, flexibility, and obedience. It is, in my opinion, when done correctly, a pleasure to watch." This was a national meet, so I had little doubt that I would be seeing it done correctly. I had my earphones in so as not to disturb Karl while he was studying. The first of the adult competitors started their runs. It was the third competitor, which the commentator had said was not well ranked, who had a problem with his horse acting up and not cooperating at all.
