"Not what I thought escape meant"
Chapter 87

"Can you believe that we may be in our new house in a week or less ?" Ross
said. "I know. It seems crazy but it is real isn't it ?" Landon said.
"Well baby you have seen the house." Ross said. Both men were slowly
walking through the herd checking for anything out of the ordinary or any
injuries. "Do you think we can make a living off this herd ?" Ross asked.
"One day we should have a very nice living off them. I still can't believe
that Carl and Max are planning to give this to us." Landon said. "I know.
I still don't understand." Ross said. "Well Max told me that family was
everything to them and that the twins decided who was family and who was
not." Landon said. "Yeah they are super boys." Ross said. "I just hope
that our children are half as good as those two." Landon said. "Our
children. I like the way that sounds. Just promise me one thing. " Ross
said. "I will try. What is it ?" Landon said. "Let's try for one at a
time. Not twins." Ross laughed. "Deal." Landon said. About that time
the ranch radio toned. Ross and Landon both stood and waited for any
further instructions. Nothing came until they heard Max talking to Carl.
"Come on." Ross said grabbing Landon's arm and running towards the gate.

The ranch seemed to ramp into high gear. The radio went wild with no clear
messages coming across. Carl and Mitch arrived within three or four
minutes of Max. There was so much dust flying from vehicles arriving and
sliding to a halt that it was hard to see the crowd gathered around the
back of the ambulance. As Joe pulled in the drive he took a quick look and
recognized Carl, Max, Brian, and two of the ranch hands with their backs
towards him watching the EMT's working on someone on the ground. Throwing
his truck into park and opening the door before it stop sliding. "CRUNCH"
caused the group to jump and turn quickly. Carl stepped back to slow Joe
down. As the group turned to see what the noise was they saw Joe running
towards the group. Behind him was his crew cab dual wheel truck with the
door still open but the hood pushed into the side of Max's SUV.

"Hey baby. What's up ?" Artie said as he answered his cell phone. "Hey
babe. Where are you?" Mitch asked. "Just leaving the house. I am headed
to look at some curtains. What's wrong you sound stressed ?" Artie said
"Not sure yet babe but they have had to call an ambulance to the ranch.
Don't go far in case we need to fire up the plane." Mitch said. "I will
head back to the main house. Who is it and what happened ?" Artie asked.
"Not sure babe. Carl and I are headed there now. Carl just asked if
someone needed to be flown out would we be able to do it. " Mitch said.
"Well I will go grab our bags and wait to hear from you. If you find out
we need to I can pick you up or I can go ahead and get everything ready."
Artie said. "Thanks babe. I will let you know as soon as I know
something. Love you babe." Mitch said. "Love you too. Let me know
something." Artie said as he turned his vehicle around and headed towards
the ranch.

"Hey honey. How are the twins ?" Daryl said as he answered the phone.
"What's going on at the ranch?" Mary asked. "Don't know. What are you
talking about ?" Daryl asked. "The ambulance and fire truck are at the
ranch. Nobody will answer their phones. I even called the farmer and his
wife and got no answer." Mary said. "Where are they at ?" Daryl asked.
"If I knew that I would not be calling you." Mary said firmly. "No
sweetheart. I mean where are the ambulance and fire truck. I am at Ross
and Landon's house so I will go check." Daryl said. "OH. I was told they
turned in where they unloaded the new herd by the farmer's house." Mary
said. "Alright. Just hold tight. I will head over there and call just as
soon as I find out something." Daryl said. "You better not forget." Mary
said. "I won't honey. Talk to you in a few." Daryl said. As Daryl got
to the end of the drive he had to wait for Ross' truck to pass for him to
pull out. "Damn he is in a hurry." Daryl thought.

The Paramedics had the stretcher loaded and headed to the rear of the
ambulance when Ross, Landon and Daryl arrived. The crowd had parted to
allow space for them to load their patient. Ross ran to Joe seeing him
setting on the ground. Not sure what had happened he was relieved to see
that Joe was alright, just shaken. Joe had pulled Zeb tight to his side
and would not consider loosening his grip at the moment. "Where are you
taking him ?" Max asked. "First to the local E.R. Once we know he is
stable the doctors may transfer him." One Paramedic said. "I will be right
behind you. Artie is getting the plane ready in case it's needed." Mitch
said. "We are right behind you too." Carl said. "No. You get everything
settled here. Make sure the farmer and his wife are alright and then you
can come." B said. B's body was barely functioning watching the love of
his life being loaded into the back of the ambulance. "What happened ?"
Landon said as he got to Max. "We are not sure yet. Durk either had a
reaction to the medication he is taking or he had a heart attack. They are
not sure yet." Max said. "What can I do ?" Landon asked. "Help the farmer
and his wife back into the house and make sure they are calm and
comfortable." Max said. "Sure thing." Landon said.

Brian had called Ty. Ty was waiting outside the Emergency Room for the
ambulance to arrive. Ty could hear the siren of the ambulance coming
around the building. Right on the bumper of the ambulance was Carl's huge
pickup truck. As they unloaded Durk the nurses and doctors were already at
the rear of the ambulance. Before they could get him inside Daryl, Ross,
Landon and Mitch all arrived. B was in the truck with Carl and Max. Max
had held his hand while he quietly watched as they carried Durk into the
Emergency Room. "He is in good hands. He will be fine." Max whispered. B
just stood and shook his head yes and gripped Max's hand tighter.

The group of men sat in silence as the staff of the Emergency room buzzed
around them. Most eyes were on B waiting for the moment that he lost his
composure. Ty came out and whispered into Max's ear. "Everything is
alright. I need to make a call." Max said. B almost lost his composure
when Max stood up to walk outside. Carl quickly took Max's place. "B if
there was something wrong Max would have told you." Carl whispered. B just
gripped Max's hand and shook his head yes as he had earlier. Max returned
but stood at the nurses station. At this point every eye was on Max.
Within about five minutes Max's phone beeped. Opening the text he turned
and asked the nurse for an email address. Moments later the nurse printed
a piece of paper and Max headed for the swinging doors into the treatment
area. There was a low whisper among the men as they heard Max's voice
raised. They could not hear what was being said but they could tell it was
heated. "You may need to go check on him." B whispered as he squeezed
Carl's hand. "I am where I am suppose to be. He is a big boy. I think
you know as well as me that he can hold his own without any help." Carl
laughed. "Poor fella." B said. "Poor Max ?" Carl asked. "Oh no honey.
Poor whoever the fella is Max is shouting at." B laughed.

They closely watched the door as the shouting ended. Moments later the
doctor came through the door with Max right behind him. Pointing to B the
doctor walked over and handed B the paper. "Is this you sir ?" The doctor
asked. "Yes it is why ?" B asked. "My first question is what would you
like for us to do for the patient. He is stable but we are at a cross
roads. " The doctor said. "You do whatever you have to do ." B said
firmly. "I have put in a call to his cardiologist in Texas. The patient
has had a mild heart attack. Right now he is stable but his heart rate
will not regulate. My suggestion would be to give him some medication to
help stabilize that and put him on an external pace maker until a
cardiologist determines if a permanent one is needed. " The doctor said.
"Well do it. Why would you wait ?" B asked.

"Well when we pulled up his medical records there was an attachment signed
by a judge. His children apparently have gotten a judge in Texas to sign
an order that since his cancer is terminal that he is not to be
resuscitated nor any invasive treatments." The doctor said. B just looked
up at Max. "It was some local judge. Brian took a picture of your power
of attorney and text it to me. He is on his way with the original. Yours
is a federal judge." Max said. "So I say what happens ?" B asked. "Yes
you do." Max said. "Doctor you do whatever needs to be done and do not
wait for insurance approval. The cost is not an issue." B said. "We will
then." The doctor said. "May I see him ?" B said. "I will tell him you
are here. Give us about twenty minutes to give him the medication and hook
up the external pace maker. Once that is done I will come get you. Ty is
in there with him now." The doctor said. About that time the Emergency
room doors opened and Brian ran in out of breath with the papers in his
hand.

B took a deep breath and they could see the tears forming in his eyes. B
quickly stood and hugged Brian tightly. "Thank you so much. He may have
died without this." B said. "Well Uncle Max is the one that thought of
it." Brian said. "Oh no. Ty is the one that came out and told me what was
happening and told me what he needed." Max said. "Remind me to hug him
too." B said. Mitch stood and pulled out his phone. "I am going to call
Artie to come and get me. We will have the plane prepared and ready if he
needs to be flown." Mitch said. "Once he can be moved I would like to take
him back to his doctor in Texas if they need to do the pace maker." B said
looking at Carl as if he had a question. "What ?" Carl said. "It's your
plane." B said. "To hell with that. It's your plane. You do what you
need too." Carl said. "One last thing. I am borrowing your plane but I
would also like to borrow your phone." B said looking at Max. "Sure." Max
said handing his cell phone to B.

Ty came out to the waiting room while B was outside. Carl stood and met Ty
coming across the room. Wrapping his arms around Ty Carl pulled him to his
chest. "He will be alright Uncle Carl." Ty said sniffling. "All because
of you buddy. Pull it together though. We don't want B to see you
crying." Carl said as he leaned down and kissed Ty on top of the head. "I
know. I just had to let some of the stress out. Where is Bpaw ?" Ty
said. "He walked outside." Carl said. Ty told the group that Durk was
stable and they would wake him up once the medication and pace maker
regulated his heart beat. The group quietly chatted as Ty headed for the
door. "That was quick." Brian said as Ty walked back up and sat down. "He
was waving his hands and shouting at the phone. I figured I would wait."
Ty said smiling.

Carl called the farmer and his wife to let them know that Durk would be
alright. Joe and Zeb came into the Emergency room while B was still on the
phone. "How is Durk ?" Joe asked. "Stable. They say he may need a pace
maker. What happened ?" Carl said looking towards Zeb. "We were looking
at the cows that had minor injuries from the trip. Mr. Durk had walked
around and looked at a few of the cows. He and the farmer were walking
back towards the house. He seemed fine but I turned around just in time to
see him grab his chest and fall to his knees. One of the guys working with
me pulled out his phone and dialed 911 and shouted for me to mash the panic
button on the ranch radio.

He was partially alert when we got to him. I put his head in my lap and
the other guy elevated his feet until the ambulance got there." Zeb said.
"Well I see you have some color back in your cheeks big brother." Carl
laughed. "Don't even go there." Joe said. Zeb looked at them both trying
to figure out what they were talking about. "Oh you should have seen him.
That big burly cowboy was white as a sheet. Hell he even jumped out of his
truck before it stopped. Max's SUV stopped his truck. OH HELL bro. I
forgot about that." Carl laughed. "At least it was his old SUV." Joe
laughed. "Sorry Uncle Joe. It was nice knowing you. You would have been
safer hitting the new one. " Brian laughed. "Maybe he will let me get rid
of that thing now." Carl laughed. "Keep it up you two. Keep talking and
you will be glad that you are at the ER. We will discuss the damage to my
baby later Joe." Max said. Zeb couldn't help but chuckle when he saw the
look on both Joe and Carl's faces.

The men could see that B was truly shaken when he came back into the
waiting room. Ty quickly told B of Durk's condition and that a nurse would
come and get them shortly to go back in the room with Durk. B hugged Ty
tightly and broke down and really cried for the first time. The group
gathered around to show their support. Once B was able to compose himself
again Ty and Max helped him to take one of the empty seats. "Everything
alright ?" Max asked. "Yes it was just time to do some house cleaning.
Take out the trash I guess you would say." B said. "House cleaning ?"
Daryl asked. "Yes and it was about time. I called our attorney and told
him to put the ranch, the hotel and all the commercial rental property up
for sale." B said. "I thought that was what Durk was leaving his kids."
Carl said. "It was until they did this. I told him to hold on to the
small plot of land that was in their mother's name but the rest was to be
sold. Once the properties are sold I told him to spend every dime I had if
needed to ruin those bastards." B said. "Will Durk agree to that ?" Max
asked. "He will not have a choice. He is so out done with them already he
will not care. We suffered and did without for years to build that fortune
and I will be damned if I will have suffered for those son of a bitches.
Time for real life to be shoved right up their up tight spoiled asses.
Time to sweep out the trash. And I will enjoy every minute of it." B said.

B had convinced everyone to leave and get back to their day. Durk was
responding well and was weak but able to speak by the time everyone left.
"What do we need to do babe ?" Carl asked as he and Max pulled out of the
hospital parking lot. "First thing we need to do is get the ranch
organized. If they do move Durk to another hospital I want to be able to
go and spend as much time as we need too." Max said. "The ranch will
live." Carl said. "I know it will and I trust Joe and Brian to keep it
running but we need to make sure everything is in place." Max said. "Your
the boss." Carl laughed and reached over and placed his hand on Max's leg.
"That really scared me." Max said. "Me too babe. Me too." Carl said.

As Joe and Zeb sat in the parking lot in Joe's truck, Zeb looked over at
Joe as he gripped the steering wheel tightly with both hands. "Are you
alright Joe ?" Zeb asked reaching over and touching Joe's arm. Joe began
to shake. "I know that you are alright. You are setting here beside me
but when they said it was your radio, and when I got there and you were on
the ground. My heart almost died." Joe said. "I can see you are shaken
but I am alright baby." Zeb whispered. "I know. I just found you and then
all that ran through my mind was that I had lost you. I know it's silly."
Joe said. "No it's not. To be honest it's flattering. I never thought I
would be missed if anything ever happened to me." Zeb said. Joe turned
and put one hand behind Zeb's head and pulled his quickly to a lip crushing
kiss. It was not one of passion but seemed to be more of desperation on
Joe's part. "I love you Zeb. I miss you when you leave the room." Joe
said. "I believe you. I miss you too when you are not within eye site."
Zeb said. "We just need to make it through the rest of the day. I can't
wait to get you home. Get you naked and wrap my arms around you and just
hold you." Joe said. "I can definitely look forward to that. Now get out
and swap places. I still don't trust you to drive. If we are going to
make it to the couch naked we have to finish the day out." Zeb said. "You
don't trust me ?" Joe said. "Well you did hit Max's pride and joy." Zeb
laughed. "Spoil sport." Joe said smiling and leaning back over for a much
more sensual kiss on the lips.

When Brian pulled back up to the barn he could see Ty's SUV at the house.
Walking across the yard he opened the kitchen door. "You home babe ?"
Brian called out. "Back here." Ty called out. Brian walked into the
master bedroom. "What are you doing ?" Brian asked. Ty had a suit case on
the bed and had thrown some clothes in it. "The doctor came to me and said
that B wanted me to be Durk's nurse. They are flying him to his
cardiologist this afternoon in Texas. I hope you don't mind." Ty said.
"Not at all. They both need you to take care of them. What can I do ?"
Brian asked. "Well I have food prepared I think. Most of the laundry has
been done. I bought groceries so the boys have plenty of snacks......." Ty
continued. "Hey ... hey... babe. I got the house and the boys. I am not
totally helpless you know." Brian laughed and he pulled Ty to him and
hugged him. "I know I am being crazy. You can manage just fine without
me." Ty said. "Oh no. You wait right there. Me and the boys will muddle
through while you are gone. That's all. You are the glue here remember.
You always say you are having to raise three." Brian laughed.

As Carl and Max arrived at the house Mitch and Artie were packing their
car. "Getting ready guys ?" Carl asked as he stepped out of the truck. "B
called and said that the doctor here had called Durk's Cardiologist in
Texas. They are going to dope Durk up for the trip and we are flying them
out in a couple of hours. Ty is going along as the nurse. " Mitch said.
"Can we do anything ?" Max asked. "Not that I know of right now. We will
let you know what the doctor in Texas says and if they are going to do any
surgery." Artie said. "Well if they plan to operate we want to be there.
I hate to ask but we may need you to fly back and get us." Carl said. "We
can fly back and get you anytime you want. That is not even a question."
Mitch said. "Well you have the company credit cards. Do whatever you need
for the plane and for yourselves." Carl said. "The plane expense is still
on B's accounts." Mitch said. "Well we will pay him back then. You just
take care of them." Max said. "We will." Artie said as he closed the truck.

As the men spoke a deputy's car pulled down the drive. " I wonder what he
wants ? I guess they have to fill out a report on what happened." Carl
said. The deputy got out of the car with a paper in his hand. "How's it
going ?" Carl asked. "Going good. How is your friend ?" The deputy
asked. "He is stable. They are moving him to a hospital in Texas but we
think he will be fine. Thanks for asking." Carl said. "I hated to come
out here today but wasn't given much choice." The deputy said. "You are
Max Rexlan, correct ?" Turning to look at Max. "You know I am but I
understand so, yes." Max said. "What is this all about ?" Carl asked. Max
took the paper and began to read it. "You have to be fucking kidding me."
Max said. "We thought the same thing but we didn't have a choice." The
deputy said. "I know you didn't. You are just doing your job." Max said.
"Doing what job ? What the hell is going on ?" Carl asked. Max held the
paper up. "You know the trial is coming up for the ranch hand that
attacked me." Max said. "Yeah don't remind me." Carl said. "Well I have
been summoned as a witness for his defense." Max said. "You are joking
right ?" Carl said as Max handed him the paper to read. "Sorry guys." The
deputy said. "It's not your fault." Max said. "Wait until I get my hands
on that fucking lawyer." Carl said. "No you don't. I can handle this."
Max said. "But......" Carl started. "But nothing. It's all legal." Max
said.

Landon rushed around the house helping the farmer's wife pack their suit
cases. The farmer had returned to the house after watching the hands
working with the cattle again. "What are you doing ?" He asked. "B called
and they are flying Durk to Texas. Go wash your face and hands. You don't
have time for a bath." She said. "A bath ? Why ?" The farmer asked.
"Landon is taking us to the airport. We are going to Texas." She said.
"They don't need us tagging along." The farmer said. "I don't remember
asking. If you want to stay here then stay but when I get back you better
not be here." The wife said. Landon moved faster to stay as far from the
conversation as he could. "I guess I am going then." The farmer said. "I
thought so." She said as she went into the bathroom to pack toiletries.

Landon still felt out of place. The farmer sat in the chair near the bed.
"Let that be a lesson young man." The farmer said. "What do you mean ?"
Landon asked. "You need to do that to Ross every now and then." The farmer
laughed. "Not to be rude but I don't think Ross would question it at all."
Landon said. "It's not that. She and I have been together so many years I
need a reminder every now and then that she still loves me." The farmer
said. "You got that out of that argument ?" Landon said. "You have to
look at it from my point. She loves me enough that she wants me to go.
She also had to prove to herself that I still loved her. When she gave me
a choice of going or moving out she knew that my answer to go meant I still
loved her." The farmer said. "You have a weird way of saying it." Landon
said. "No son. We say it every day. You will realize that after a few
years that you have to do more than say it. You have to prove it. You and
Ross will learn what little things are proof to each other." The farmer
said. "I guess you are right." Landon said. "I don't mind going at all.
In fact I would feel better being there than staying here. Just don't tell
her I said that." The farmer laughed. "Your secret is safe with me."
Landon laughed.

The engines on the plane were humming as the ambulance pulled up to the
ramp. Mitch, Artie, Ty and Landon met the Paramedic as he opened the back
doors. "Oh my. A royal welcome with such scrumptious men." B said
smiling. "How is Mr. Durk ?" Landon spoke up quickly. "Well first off.
"Uncle" Durk will be alright. Second why is it I get a reception of such
young and viral hotties that it's all about that old fart." B laughed.
"They are looking at you sweetheart." Durk whispered. "I know they are
baby. Yes he will be fine. It's all about me. Like it should be." B said
laughing as he stepped out of the ambulance. All but the Paramedic
chuckled at B. The Paramedic did not know B well enough to know that it
was normal behavior. Everyone smiled but the one. As B walked by he
stopped and placed his hand lightly on the man's should. "Hang around long
enough sweet cheeks and you will know the real me." B said as he took his
hand from the man's shoulder but before walking off reached back and
pinched him on the butt. The Paramedic jumped. "Oh yes. Nice and firm.
Just like B likes them." B laughed causing the Paramedic to smile and
blush. "Is he always like that ?" He asked. "Oh believe me. That's the
calm version." Artie whispered. "I heard that." B called back laughing.

Once Durk was settled in the bedroom of the plane and Ty had given him a
shot to relax him for the trip the others assembled in the main cabin.
Landon and the Paramedics were about to exit the plane when B hugged the
Farmer's wife and broke down into a hysteric cry. Ty stood beside the
famer and Landon. "You see sons. Sometimes you just have to trust your
partner that they know more about what you need to do and where you need to
be than you do yourself. " The farmer said before patting each one on the
shoulder. "Alright everyone if you will take a seat and buckle up we will
be taking off in about three minutes." Artie said as he walked back from
the cock pit. "Let us know what's going on." Landon said as he hugged Ty.
"I will. Do me a favor and check in on Brian and the boys. I want the
house still standing when I get back." Ty laughed. "You got it. Ross and
I will check on them tonight." Landon said as he started down the stairs.
