"Not what I thought escape meant"
Chapter 71

Flo entered the house and told the group inside what little she knew of the
situation over at the duplexes. The group was speechless. "Max and Carl
were in the house with the investigator and the two ranch hands involved."
Flo said. "What was that about my yard ?" Mary asked. "They chased a
truck from the duplexes and it wrecked in your yard. Daryl and Joe had
left to go there." Flo said. "Daryl won't answer his phone." Mary said.
"Well honey I am sure he has his hands full at the moment. What is going
on with Brian ?" Flo asked. "Long story." B said. "To hell with this. I
am going over there." Mary said putting the pistol in her pocket and
walking towards the door. "Not without me." B said heading for the door.
"You coming old man ?" B asked. "No. They don't need me. I trust you to
get all the juicy details." Durk said. "Watch it old man." B said. "I'm
going too." Flo said.

Mary had gotten in Ross' truck and fired the diesel engine up. Ross heard
the truck but decided that Brian, Ty and the twins were more of a concern
than any pickup truck. As they came through the trees Mary's heart
stopped when she saw all the red and blue lights. Moving slowly down the
drive she pulled up to the road. In the distance was another set of blue
lights headed in their direction. Mary sat and waited as the patrol car
passed by and also a wrecker. Pulling out behind them the three in the
truck headed towards Mary and Daryl's house. As they got to the curve in
the road they could see all the blue lights and red lights. Mary pulled
over in the edge of the field across from her house. Before opening the
door she spotted Daryl and Joe on her front porch. Mary's trip to the
porch was very quick. Unsatisfied with both Joe and Daryl's knowledge of
the events the truck was headed back to the Brian and Ty's house while the
wrecker tried to upright the truck in her yard.

Max had made it back in the house as the first ranch hand came out of the
office. A couple of the other ranch hands were standing in the living
room. "Guys take him to the Emergency Room and have him checked out. Have
them bill it to the ranch." Max said. "I am fine boss." the ranch hand
said. "That was not a request." Max said. "Come on buddy. Let's run you
up there." One said. As Max walked in the office he could see the blank
look of anger on Carl's face and his massive well tanned hands had turned
white from the tightness of his fist. Max walked over and sat on the arm
of the chair and took Carl's hand into his. "Everyone is fine baby." Max
whispered. Carl just looked up at Max and seemed to calm almost
immediately.

The second ranch hand took a seat in the office. "I wanted to talk to both
of you separately because I didn't want each of you to hear the other's
accounts of what happened. I know that things happened quickly but I need
you to tell me the best that you can remember exactly what happened and in
order of how it happened. If you remember something please don't go back
to add that in. I will give you the opportunity to do that at the end. Do
you understand what I am asking for ?" The detective said. "Yes sir." The
hand said. "So you have any questions ?" The detective asked. "Um. Only
one. I don't want to hurt my boss' feeling with some of the things that I
have to say." The ranch hand said. "You won't hurt our feelings. You say
what you need to say and all will be fine. DO NOT hold anything back on
our account." Max said.

Mary arrived at the house and as B and Flo got out of the truck they could
see that Mary was still frozen in her seat. The Crime Scene Investigation
unit was there and dusting for prints and marking things off in the yard.
B and Flo walked slowly up to the front of the Duplexes. B felt a little
weak at the knees as he surveyed the area. Mary caught up with them and
was speechless. Looking over her shoulder she saw another Crime Scene
truck in front of Brian and Ty's house. Without speaking she touched both
B and Flo and turned and headed that direction. As she approached the
front of the house her heart began to race and her body began to shake.
Just as she felt she was headed to her knees B caught her. The two sat
down on the ground and began to cry. "Well I'll be fucked." Flo whispered.

The second ranch hand hesitated as he looked at the investigator. Looking
towards both Max and Carl he opened his mouth but could not speak. "Sorry
guys. I really don't want to say some of this stuff." He said. "Go
ahead. We all need to know the entire truth." Carl said. "I understand
you were the first one to confront them." The investigator said. "Yes
sir. My duplex is right beside Ross'." The ranch hand said. "Well start
from the beginning. Go back to before the truck arrived and try not to
leave anything out." The investigator said.

The ranch hand took a deep breath. "Well I had took my shower and was
watching some television when I heard what I thought was gun shots. They
sounded kind of close so I turned the volume down and I heard some
shouting. I got up and put my jeans and shirt on and started to the
door. When I opened the door I saw this pickup truck barreling across in
front of the barn headed this way. I went back to my bedroom and loaded my
pistol. When I stepped back out the door they were already shouting.
There were two guys in the cab of the truck and two standing on the top of
the bed behind the cab leaning over the top. The truck was right in front
of the duplex with the headlights shining in the front door and window.
That fella's son, the one that owns the hardware store, was drunk as a
skunk. He was shouting at Ross' door. He said for Ross and his pussy boy
to come out and take his medicine. He shouted that they had caused him to
loose his truck and get put on restriction and wasn't no low life faggot
going to get away with that. I am not sure what all else they said. It
all happened so fast. One of the other boys hollered for them to come out
so he could shove his shot gun up his ass since he liked taking it up the
shitter." The ranch hand stopped and with his head still lowered looked
towards Carl and Max. "What happened next ?" The investigator asked.

"Well they were hollering stuff like they didn't need any more faggots in
this town and that when they were through all the fudge packers would run
away scared. I could tell they were all quite drunk. I opened my mouth to
tell them to get on out of here and before I could say anything they
started shooting into the duplex. All four blasted as fast as they could
in there. I hollered at them and they stopped. That store owner's sun
turned towards me and asked me if I liked it up the ass and pointed his gun
at me. My buddy heard all the shooting and came out of his duplex and as
he rounded the corner the boy missed me and grazed him. The boy in the
passenger side started shooting into Ross' car while the boy on the far
side of the truck started shooting back into the house. That man's son and
the one driving the truck started shooting at us. My buddy winged that
man's son in the shoulder and he started cursing saying that a faggot had
shot him and to get a rope. He fired two more shots at us. The driver
pointed his gun at me and fired. I didn't want to kill anybody so I shot
three times about seat level into the driver's door. The driver jerked the
truck in gear and hit the front of the house . As he backed up he ended up
throwing the other boy off the back of the truck. When he took off out the
drive he threw that store owner's boy out. That one that fell out jumped
up and said he would kill every mother fucking faggot on this ranch.
That's when he raised his gun and my buddy shot him in the leg. Not sure
who called you guys but I didn't have time. Until you got there we just
stood and made sure they didn't move. One was crying that he had been
shot. The other was out cold." The hand said.

Max's body was shaking. The ranch hand looked towards Carl and Max. "I
hope I did right boss. I didn't shoot until they shot at me. When I
realized they had shot up Brian and Ty's house and those two babies would
normally be in there. I had to keep my wits about me to keep from killing
them." He said. Turning back to the investigator. "You know the rest."
The ranch hand said. Finally sinking in that some of the bullets had went
through the windows and walls in Shawn and Shane's bedroom Max lunged for
the trash can. Carl leaned over and placed his hand on Max's back as he
violently vomited into the trash can. Max sat back on his knees still
spitting the vile stuff from his mouth. "You need anything else officer ?"
Carl asked. "Not at the moment." He said. "So this will be charged as a
hate crime." Max said. "Nobody mentioned hate crime." The investigator
said. "I did and if you can't make it happen I can." Max said. "Don't get
ahead of yourself." The investigator said. "I am not but I guarantee you I
am one step ahead of you." Max said glaring at the man.

The group cleared the house so that the Crime Scene people could finish.
Joe and Daryl had arrived back at the house by this point. Mary was almost
uncontrollable when she saw the holes in the windows and walls of the twins
bedroom and the front door and window. "It's going to be fine baby. They
weren't hurt and I can fix all this." Daryl said. Joe just stood there
speechless. He could see B shaking and walked up and put his arm around
the elderly man. "This could have been bad Joe. Real bad." B said. "I
know. I'm not so mad at Brian anymore. If he had not acted like he did
they would be home and Ross and Landon would have been home too." Joe
said. "So much hate tonight. So much hate." B whispered.

Carl and Max stepped off the front porch as a pickup came flying up the
drive. The driver jumped out. "WHERE THE FUCK IS MY SON AND WHO's ASS DO
I WHIP ?" He shouted. The passenger door opened a little slower and a lady
stepped out that you can tell had been crying. "Your lucky he isn't in a
fucking grave." Max shouted back. "You queer mother fucker." The man said
and ran towards Max. Flo had walked over and hugged the lady that was
crying. The man did not realize that he had to get past Daryl to get to
Max. Daryl planted his foot in front of the man which caused him to sail
across the gravel on his stomach. By this point Max was on the man with a
pistol in his face. "If those babies had been home he would have killed
two innocent children." Max growled. "If you had never stopped in this
town this would have never happened. That other boy would have still been
alive too. It's all your fucking fault. We don't want you here so get the
fuck out." The man yelled. Hearing that Carl ran towards Max and the other
man. "You sorry piece of shit." Carl shouted. Max was able to stop Carl
without loosing aim on the man with his pistol.

"Life is about change mother fucker. Grow up and get use to it. This is
over. Your son will be charged with a hate crime." Max said. "Ain't no
body charging my damn son with no crime at all much less a hate crime." The
man growled. "Should have thought about that while you were raising the
wimp." Max said. "WIMP ?" The man shouted. "Yes wimp. A tittie baby that
hides behind alcohol, and gun and his sorry ass father." Max said. "Watch
what you are saying." The man said. "Oh I know every word I say." Max
said. "If you stayed in Georgia where all the ferries belong then you
wouldn't have to worry about those two brats." The man said. Carl quickly
caught Max and took the gun from him. "Listen to what I say because I will
not repeat it. And yes I have thought about every single word. If that
low life son of yours draws another free breath in this town as long as I
live I will kill his ass in cold blood on the court house square and let
you watch the piece of trash die. You got me ?" Max said. "Is that a
threat ?" The man said. "Oh hell no. As God as my witness and everyone
here. I will go to prison for the rest of my life and smile every day. If
he ever gets out of prison he better not set foot in this town as long as I
live." Max said. "Alright you two. You need to calm down." The
investigator said. "You will pay for my son being shot on your ranch." The
man said. "Oh believe me right now I would gladly pay for his coffin and I
would be there to make sure they put the right piece of shit in the
ground." Max said.

Carl pulled Max away and began to walk him towards the barn. As the man
tried to stand B walked up to him. "I have one more thing for you. I
think it's best that you pack your little toys and go somewhere else. " B
said. By this point the yard had filled with local people coming out to
see what was going on. "And who the fuck are you ?" The man asked. "I
don't have children but one of those that your son tried to shoot tonight
is the closest thing I will ever have. You won't have to worry about Max
killing your son. IF he ever gets free I will cut your sorry smelly balls
and dick off and shove it down your throat while you watch your son die." B
said. "All these fucking threats from faggots." The man growled. "Oh it's
no threat my friend. I know that Max and Carl have some money but nothing
compared to me. If I ever see you around here again you will find out
exactly why even God is scared of me." B said. "God so many fucking
faggots." The man said. "Yes sir buddy. Us faggots love to fuck. But you
fuck with me and you will soon learn that sex is not the only way we fags
know how to fuck. I will fuck your world up." B said as he started to walk
off. "Yeah what he said." Joe said as he passed by.

Max's body began to shake even more when he saw Ross' car and his duplex.
Turning around he headed back towards the group in the front yard. "Baby
calm down. I think he got the message." Carl said. Max didn't say a word
but kept walking. Walking past the man that was brushing himself off he
turned the corner of the truck. Headed towards Flo and the mother Flo held
her tighter and glared at Max. Max took the lady and hugged her. "I am so
sorry. I tried." She cried. "I know you did. I don't blame you at all.
I am just sorry things turned out this way." Max said. "I understand what
you mean now about allowing poison on your ranch." She said still crying.
"I know you are concerned about your son and I would be upset if you
weren't. Flo will you take her to the hospital so that she can check on
him ? If you need anything. I mean anything other than something for him
or your husband please make sure I am the first person you call." Max
said. "How can you be so kind ?" She cried. "I have no quarrel with you.
You are not your husband or son." Max said. By this point Flo had tears in
her eyes along with Mary who was standing next to them. "Come on. Let's
get you to the hospital." Flo said.

Out of the corner of Max's eye he saw the other lady that had shown up at
the ranch. Walking over to her. "I hope your son was not one of them."
Max said. "No sir. He is in the car. He was afraid to get out." She
said. "Do you mind if I talk to him ?" Max asked. "Um.. I guess not." She
said. "Come with me then." Max said. Carl was speechless and amazed at
how Max had quickly turned the switch off and was the one trying to defuse
the situation. The lady opened the back door to the car. It was quite
easy to tell that the young boy was shaken up and nervous. "I promise I
didn't know anything about this. They wanted me to go riding with them but
I told them I was on restriction and it was not worth it. I am glad now I
stayed home." The boy said. Max could tell the boy was about to cry. "I
want to thank you." Max said. "For what ?" The young man asked. "For
growing up and being a man and not taking part in all of this." The boy
said. "They like to drink. My Mom would tan my hide. His Dad gives him
all the liquor he wants." The boy said. "And now he will pay for his
father's ignorance." Max said. "This is whacked." The boy said. "I
agree. I just wanted to thank you for not being a part of it. You have
earned my respect and that can be tough." Max said. Turning back to the
mother she mouthed the words. "Thank You." "Some of life's lessons are
best learned by watching the actions of others and realizing how close they
were to being in the same situation." Max said. Walking back towards the
duplexes he passed the owner of the Hardware store. "Get the fuck off my
land and I better never catch you on it again. Oh yes we now own Flo's so
you aren't allowed there either." Max said without missing a step.

Max made it back as far as Carl's truck before his knees began to buckle.
Carl quickly reached out and caught him. "I knew it was coming." Carl
whispered. "I need to. I have to...." Max said trembling. "Me too. We
need to see and touch our family." Carl said. Max just seemed to melt into
Carl. As they headed down the drive Carl held tight to Max's hand. "You
know he was wrong don't you ?" Carl said. "About what ?" Max said. "The
part about you should have never come here and were not wanted here." Carl
said. Max just squeezed Carl's hand and looked out the passenger window.
As they cleared the trees and could see the house Carl spotted the group in
the corner of the front yard. "What the.... ?" Carl started. "Stop the
truck. Stop the truck. There they are." Max said opening the door before
Carl could come to a complete stop. Before he could get the truck in park
Max was running across the yard.

Max almost tackled the group trying to hug all six at one time. "I am so
sorry Uncle Max. I am so so sorry." Brian cried. "I know you are. I am
just so glad that everyone is safe." Max cried. As Carl got out of his
truck and headed towards them he saw Ross' truck and Joe's truck coming up
the drive. The ranch hand had filled them in on the complete story. By
this point they knew who the other three boys were involved where Carl and
Max did not. Joe got out of his truck about the time Carl reached the
group. Seeing the concern even from that distance in the twin's faces he
walked over to the group. "Alright you two. Looks like you have gotten
dirty again. Let's get inside and let Uncle Joe get you both a bath." Joe
said reaching down to pick up Shane. Shane was sort of limp and
unresponsive. Shawn was the same but at least put forth and effort to put
his arms around Joe's neck. "We didn't mean too Unca Joe." Shane
whispered. "Didn't mean to what baby ?" Joe said. "Make every body cwy."
Shawn said and buried his face in Joe's neck. "Oh no no babies. You
didn't make any body cry. You didn't do anything wrong." Carl said and
turned to try to take the twins. Latched tightly to Joe, Carl's efforts
were futile. Max released the others and walked up and placed a hand on
each twin's back. "Babies you didn't do anything wrong. You did
everything right." Max said and kissed each one on the hand. "We did ?"
Shawn whispered still buried in Joe's neck. "Yes you did babies. You were
big boys tonight. Uncle Carl and I are so proud of you." Max said.
"Alright time to get some rug rats wet." Carl said. "We not wats Unca
Carl." Shawn said with his face still in Joe's neck. "Your my rats." Carl
said tickling each one.

The group finally made it in the house. Carl told the group about the
stories that ranch hands had told. Ross and Landon's faces were in shock
the entire time. The farmer and his wife were visibly shaken along with
the rest. Daryl and Mary also learned things that they had not heard.
Durk seemed to be the one that was not as affected. Max excused himself
and went into the office to call Flo. "How are things going there ?" Max
asked. "Your employee just left. They put in a couple of stitches and
gave him an antibiotic shot." Flo said. "How about the others ?" Max
asked. "Well they aren't dead if that's what you are asking." Flo said.
"You know me better than that Flo. They are kids. Very misguided ones but
they are still kids. " Max said. "Sorry Max. This whole thing just has me
rattled. They have taken two to another hospital for surgery. It was not
life threatening but the doctors wanted them at a better surgical center.
The driver of the truck is in surgery here and the passenger is getting his
broken bones set. You need to praise your guys. The doctor's said they
knew exactly what to do to wound them but not really hurt them." Flo said.
"Thank you for all your help Flo. I will have someone come pick you up.
Your car is still here." Max said. "Don't worry honey. I have my own
ride. It may be in the morning. If you know what I mean." Flo said.
"Don't get too freaky Flo." Max laughed. "Honey Flo is a super freak in
the boudoir." Flo laughed.

Max returned to the room. "I talked to Flo and everyone will be alright.
A couple of the boys were taken to another hospital for surgery but it was
not life threatening." Max said. "That's good to hear." Mary said. Brian
was still sobbing and shaking. The thought of loosing everything dear to
him including Ross and Landon almost broke him emotionally. "Why don't you
take Brian upstairs and get him a shower. Everyone is staying here
tonight. Everyone." Carl said. "We will be fine. We are going home."
Mary said. "Had you rather hear me say it or had you rather my husband say
it. Everyone is staying here. I am the nice one remember." Carl
laughed. Carl told the farmer and his wife and Durk and B would stay in
the pool house. The rest of the bedrooms would be easily divided. Max
watched Ross and Landon. As the conversation went on he could tell that
they both just wanted to run away. "I guess some body needs to go see if
the dwarfs have drown their Uncle Joe." Max said. "I will." B said.

B entered the master bathroom to find Joe naked in the tub playing with the
boys. "Alright boys. Bpaw is here to get you so I don't drawn." Joe
laughed as the boys splashed. "You boys should be prunes by now." B said.
"Yeah I am about to shrivel up." Joe said. B leaned over to get one of the
boys. "Oh my." B whispered. "Yeah be careful. Make sure it's a boy you
grab." Joe laughed. "Oh honey doesn't look like all that water wrinkled
anything you got." B said and sighed. After wrapping the second boy in a
towel B turned to see Joe standing in the edge of the tub waiting for him
to move and at eye level was a huge cock and low hanging balls right in his
face. B fanned his face quickly. "Oh if I were younger." B said. "And
female." Joe laughed.

Max reached down and placed his hand on Carl's shoulder. "Ross and
Landon. Can we see you two in the office for a minute ?" Max asked. As
the group stood they were almost knocked down by two squealing naked little
boys running from Bpaw who had clothes in each hand. "Alright you two." B
said as he passed Max and Carl. As they turned the corner the group
laughed as they heard the boys still squealing and running and B calling
out. " A little help would be appreciated." To anyone that would listen.

"Are you two alright ?" Max asked as they all sat down. Landon had held
back his emotions until this point. Landon began to cry. Ross slid a
little closer and put his arm around Landon. "I hope you two don't think
you brought any of this on." Carl said. "We have brought you too much
pain. The best thing for us to do is pack up and move on. We love all you
guys but the twins could have gotten killed tonight because of us. I
couldn't live with that." Ross said. "Bullshit." Joe said as he walked
into the room. Walking over he picked Landon up just like he was one of
the twins and sat him in his lap. He reached his other arm around Ross and
pulled him to this shoulder. "Don't squirm like the little ones there
buddy. All I have on is this robe." Joe laughed. If Landon had held back
any emotions once he was in Joe's lap they were all released. "We don't
want you going any where. If the truth be known it's more my fault than
yours. If I had never stopped here none of this would have happened." Max
said. "They aren't going anywhere and that's bullshit too Max and you know
it." Joe said. "But Mr. Joe." Ross said. "One last time I will remind you
that it's Uncle Joe. The other thing is that you two are not going any
where. Shit happens and you have to man up and face life. Do you like
living here ? Do you like being part of the Rexlan family ?" Joe asked.
"Yes sir." both mumbled. "Settled then. The theater, Brian, tonight.
None of that was your fault. You just happened to be at the center of it.
So no body is going anywhere. Besides I have to live around my husband's
brother. If you two leave he will be pissed and I am not about to deal
with that." Joe laughed. Carl and Max just watched. Joe motioned for
them to leave him alone with the boys. As they left they watched Joe press
his lips into Landon's hair. Rubbing Landon's back with one hand and his
other had Ross pulled tight to his shoulder.

The driveway alarm sounded as Ross and Max returned to the great room.
Bpaw looked exhausted but both boys had their pajamas on. "No who the hell
can that be ?" Max asked. "Not sure but they have a deputy with them."
Carl said. Max and Carl walked out onto the front porch. As the truck
came into sight Carl took a deep breath. "Figured this would happen." Carl
said. "What ?" Max said. "That's another of the boy's fathers." Carl
said.

To his surprise two men stepped out of the truck just as the deputy exited
his patrol car. Carl and Max remained on the steps. "Hey Carl. Hey Max."
One man said. "Hey." Carl said. "How is your son ?" Max said causing a
low moan from Carl. "Physically he will be fine. Mentally who the hell
knows." He said. "How about yours ?" Max asked the other man. "Don't
know. He is on his own. Me and the wife have done all we can with him."
The man said. "Regardless of what has happened and what he has done. He
is still your son." Max said. "We came here to apologize and tell you that
we knew nothing about this until it was all over." The first man said. "I
don't have a problem with either of you . Your sons on the other hand had
better never cross my property line again." Carl said. "No need in
worrying about that." The second man said. "Look. I am not upset with
either of you. Yes what happened tonight was dumb and scary. It could
have been a lot worse. I will be upset though if you don't go and take
care of your son and your family." Max said. "You mean that don't you ?"
The man said. "In the most sincere and serious way I can come up with."
Max said. "Well we will pay for all the damages." The first man said.
"Keep your money. We have insurance. Use that money to get a good lawyer
and him some metal help." Carl said as he reached his hand out to shake
hands with the two men.

Carl and Max came back into the great room. B was setting in a chair
fanning himself. "What's wrong with you ?" Carl said. "Have you ever seen
your brother naked ?" B said. "All the time. Slept in the same bed until
he graduated high school and we both sleep naked. "No damn wonder you are
gay." B said. "Oh so you saw something you liked huh ?" Durk said. "OH
honey if I were forty years younger I might try to take that on. I am too
old for that much meat." B said. "If my brother looked like that and we
slept together naked I would be a lot gayer than I am now." B said. "More
?" The farmer said. "You watch it old man too. Remember I am going to be
living with you." B said causing them all to laugh. Mary and The farmer's
wife came back into the great room. "What's so funny ?" Mary asked. "B's
hormones are acting up." Carl said. "You watch it." B said. "He was just
commenting on the Rexlan endowment." Daryl laughed. "Oh that. Carl is
bigger than Joe." Mary said. "OH MY. You poor thing." B said looking at
Max. "MARY." Carl said. "I use to change your diaper remember. And you
nor Joe had any problem running around naked when the folks weren't
