"Not what I thought escape meant"
Chapter 40

Carl reached the room before they brought Max back in. The doctor came in
as soon as Max was returned. Max had been fitted with air pressure casts
on both legs. "It was compound fractures so we have put these air pressure
casts on him. These allow us to adjust the pressure as we are able to pull
the fluid off his legs, ankles and feet. Once these are removed he will
have to have some sort of leg supports for at least a month. His kidney
function seems to be improving with the fluids so we are not going to try
dialysis at the moment. His veins are very weak so that would be too
traumatic. Otherwise his heart seems to be stronger and he seems to be
responding to the fluids and the nutrients. We will try him on solid foods
tomorrow." the doctor said. "That all sounds good Doc. but how serious is
this ?" Carl asked. "Well lets just say that God was smiling on this man
today. Another couple of days and if he had even made it here I am not
sure that the damage could be reversed. I am honestly shocked with the
amount of stress fractures that he was even walking or at least not
screaming with every step.: the doctor said. "How long will he need to
stay ?" Carl asked. "We will know more tomorrow. If he does well with
solid foods and his kidneys continue to improve it will only be a day or
so. BUT I will say this. It will be a couple of weeks before he can
return to , what can I say, normal activity." the doctor said. "Well he
wont be doing anything for quite a while I assure you." Carl said. "I
think you missed my point. I am assuming that you two are gay partners.
Due to the malnutrition mainly Max's intestines are paper thin. Anal sex
at this point might kill him. You will have to give his internal organs at
least a couple of weeks to rebuild." the doctor said. "Don't worry Doc.
That will not happen until I know that he is completely well. Even if it
never happens again as long as he gets well is all I care." Carl said.
"That is refreshing to hear. I can tell that when he is released he will
be in good hands." the doc. said.

Carl sat all night just watching Max sleep. Behind the pail skin and now
thin face Carl still recognized the man that he loved. "Why would you live
this way baby ? Your cowboy is hear now and I promise that no one will
ever hurt you again." Carl whispered. Carl played the scenes over and over
in his mind of what happened with the waitress. Then he could feel the
pain in his own legs from every step Max made on his seven mile trek. Then
remembering almost every square inch of the camper Carl held Max's hand a
little bit tighter. Afraid to sleep, Carl sat and watched Max to make sure
he did not disappear.

Brian had called Ty to tell him the good news. "What are you going to do
when you see your Uncle Max ?" Ty asked. "The first thing I am going to do
is hug and kiss him. The next is give him hell for putting me through all
this." Brian said. There was a long silence. "Are you still there ?"
Brian asked. "For the moment." Ty said. "Why do you say that ?" Brian
said. "I was hoping that you had learned a lesson but apparently not." Ty
said. "Why would you say that. I am not really going to give him hell."
Brian said. "Well I don't think you could. Either me or Carl would beat
your ass before you could. My issue is that for some reason with
everything you have heard about his condition, and I don't really think you
know just how close to death he was, you still want to make this about
you." Ty said. "I didn't mean to do that." Brian said. "Well I see now
that your Uncle Carl was right about giving Max time to recover before you
can see him." Ty said. " I guess I have made a mess of things." Brian
said. "You sure have but lucky for you and the babies you have a chance to
repair this." Ty said. "As long as you are not ready to give up on me and
are willing to help." Brian said.

Carl called Bob early in the morning to let him know that Max had been
found. He also gave Bob the name and contact information of Durk's
lawyer. "Those cows are the last thing on my mind right now but if it had
not been for Durk I would not have found Max. If you can handle all the
negotiations and contracts for me I trust you." Carl said. "It all sounds
fairly simple and straight forward so I will get it handled. You just take
care of Max." Bob said. A few minutes later Carl's phone rang again. This
time it was Paul. Bob had called to tell him the news. Carl told Paul
everything that the doctor had told him. "How is he doing mentally ?" Paul
asked. "I am not sure. They are not going to wake him up until after
lunch. I am a little scared though. He has not been conscious since I
stood up and called his name. He grabbed his chest and fell to the floor.
What if he didn't want to be found ?" Carl said. "I am sure that is not
true. I have known Max for a few years. He is a very strong man. You
just have to prove to him that you want him there and he is not a threat to
you." Paul said. "He has never been anything to me but a blessing." Carl
said. "You know that but from what Max has lived through you will have to
be patient with him so that he realizes it to. I am sure it will take a
while because he will be waiting for the next bomb to drop. I hope that
you are a patient man." Paul said. "For him I have all the patience in the
world." Carl said. "Well if he needs some where to recoup other than the
ranch he is welcome to come here. You know you are both welcome anytime."
Paul said. "Thanks buddy but I hope it doesn't come to that. If it does
though I will keep that in mind." Carl said.

Darren decided to stop and visit his Aunt Flo on his way back from Texas.
He arrived in the early morning hours and was still asleep when Flo left to
open the diner. Pulling up to the diner Darren had to park on the curb
since the parking lot was packed. "Damn Aunt Flo sure has a busy place."
he thought to himself. Entering the front door he had to hold his
composure to keep from laughing. Behind the counter he saw what he
remembered to be his Aunt Flo but with a hideous Dolly Pardon wig on.
Walking to the counter Flo turned and walked around the counter quickly and
grabbed Darren in a hug. "Everybody some of you remember my nephew
Darren. He is the one that found Max for us." Flo called out. Mary and
Daryl were the first to reach Darren. A hug from Mary with tears in her
eyes and a firm hand shake followed by a hug from Daryl has Darren
confused. People seemed to line up to shake his hand or hug his neck.
Different ones from the community handed him cash and some handed him a
check.

Once the crowd had made their rounds Flo came back and hugged Darren once
again. "What in the world is going on Aunt Flo ?" Darren asked. "Honey
that man has touched everyone in this room in such a very short time they
all wanted to thank you for finding him." Flo said. "I seem to get the
feeling that he is even more special than you said he was. I figured at
first it was someone you had a crush on." Darren said. "Oh no honey. Now
that cowboy of his is a different story." Flo laughed. "You have no clue
how special he is." Mary said. "Sad thing Mrs. Mary is that he has no clue
how special he is." Darren said. Setting down with Mary, Daryl, Joe and
the neighbors Darren told them of all he witnessed. Mary and Flo both had
tears in their eyes. "How is he doing now ?" Joe asked. "Not sure Mr.
Joe. When I left he had not woken up since he saw Carl and passed out. I
am sure Carl told you that the doctor said that he got there just in time."
Darren said. "I can't believe he was walking that far to work." Daryl
said. "It was apparent after Carl and I went to the camper he lived in
that he had no choice. He didn't have enough money to ride the bus and
live too so he walked." Darren said. "Carl said they were suppose to wake
him up today." Mary said. "Well I want to go kick that little waitresses
ass." Flo said. "Well I think your friend Mr. Durk took care of that.
Last night there wasn't but a couple of cars in the parking lot. They will
be closed within the month." Darren said. "Serves them right." Daryl
said. "Well you saw him and talked to him. What do we need to do ?" Mary
asked. "Be patient. It will probably take a long time to get back the Max
you said you had. You may not completely get him back." Darren said. "Oh
we will get him back." Flo said. "Aunt Flo that picture you sent me showed
a glow or I guess you could say a smile in his eyes. That is gone. When
he looks at you its just empty." Darren said.

Carl had both hands wrapped around one of Max's hands with his head laying
on top. He felt Max's hand begin to tremble and sweat. Lifting his head
he could see Max was awake and looking down at him. Tears and fear in his
eyes Max tried to smile but his lips were so parched that one split
slightly and began to bleed. "Hey baby." Carl said standing and leaning
over to kiss Max on his forehead. Max turned his head so that he was
facing away from Carl. The monitor showed his blood pressure begin to rise
drastically. Carl got up and moved to the other side of the bed. "Baby
its going to be fine. Please calm down." Carl said as he rubbed the back
of his hand down the side of Max's face. "How did....?" Max started but
could not finish. "Well you know how you hate Flo popping that gum ?" Carl
said. Max just looked up at Carl and did not speak. "Well get use to it.
I am buying her a lifetime supply of it. She hired a better private
detective than I did. Do you remember a customer in the restaurant named
Darren for the last couple of days ?" Carl asked. "Yes." Max said. "That
is Flo's nephew. He is a private detective." Carl said and smiled. "I am
sorry. I have done it again." Max said as tears fell down his cheek.
"Done what baby ?" Carl said. "Ruined someone else's life. I just don't
get it. I guess I am the bad penny." Max said closing his eyes. "Yes you
did do it again but not what you think. You did what you do best. You
made us even richer." Carl whispered. "What are you talking about ?" Max
said.

Carl explained to Max the events that brought him there and his meeting
with Durk. He told Max about the contracts being prepared and how helpful
and kind Durk had been. He also told him that Durk had his sign and steaks
removed from the restaurant. "I hate that. The owner was very nice to
me. It was just his daughter. She was afraid I was going to tell her
father about everything that she stole." Max said. "Baby why in the world
would you live the way you did ?" Carl asked. "I had all I needed.
Besides I didn't deserve that ." Max said. "Baby you deserve the world
handed to you on a silver platter." Carl said. With that comment Max
turned his head again so that he was facing away from Carl. Carl swallowed
his frustration knowing that would be catastrophic and moved back around
the bed. "I don't want the world. I just want to stop hurting people."
Max said. "Baby you have been hurting your whole life it seems but you are
not the one doing the hurting." Carl said. "No, no. Brian and my brother
were right." Max said. "No they weren't. Brian was acting like that
waitress you worked with. A spoiled rotten brat. And there is just no
excuse for your brother." Carl said. "Please don't be mad at Brian. He
and the boys love you so much." Max said. "Brian and I are fine. He and
Ty seem to be too. Ty has done a lot of work with him making him finally
grow up and be a man." Carl said. "It wasn't his fault." Max said. "Yes
baby it was. It was not your fault. Brian is grown and he has children.
He needed a wake up call. He can't blame someone else for all his
problems. He has to face them like a man and he is finally doing that."
Carl said.

The doctor came in and interrupted the conversation. "How is our patient
this morning ?" the doctor asked. "I am fine." Max said. "You told me he
would say that ." the doctor laughed looking at Carl. "Well we know you
aren't but we are going to get you there. I hope you know just how lucky
you are. Another couple of days and there would have not been much we could
do to help you." the doctor said. "He's here and that's what's important."
Carl said. The doctor explained to Max everything that was going on and
how close to "no return" he was. He also let both men know that at that
point there didn't seem to be any permanent damage but that Max would have
to be very careful with his bones and his kidneys for a long time to come.
"I have one question though. How in the world did you walk that far and
work like you did with your legs and feet so bad ? You had to be in
unbelievable pain." the doctor said. "Pain is just a state of mind. You
can tolerate a lot when you know you have no choice." Max said. "Well you
are stronger than me then. I see you aren't taking anything for pain.
Just let us know when you need something because your legs are going to
hurt especially with these air casts adjusting as the swelling goes down."
the doctor said. "I will be fine." Max said. "He will. When I see him
hurt I will tell the nurses. I am not leaving it up to him." Carl said.

As the doctor left a man appeared in the doorway. Durk's chauffeur/butler
walked in with clothes for Carl from his room at the Hotel. Mr. Durk sent
me here with a change of clothes and your toiletries Mr. Rexlan. He also
instructed me to stand guard at the door while you showered and freshened
up." he said. "Thank him for me but I can lock the door when I decide to
shower." Carl said. "Well sir Mr. Durk informed me that you would probably
not shower unless a guard was at the door for two reasons. One to keep
anyone out and the other to give you assurance that this Mr. Rexlan didn't
get up and leave while you were in the shower." the man said. "The man
thinks of everything doesn't he ?" Carl laughed. Max and the man were
introduced and the man left the room pulling the door closed behind him.
Carl leaned over and kissed Max on the lips. "It wont take but a minute.
I promise." Carl said.

Max smiled as he saw the beautiful naked man walk out of the bathroom of
the hospital room. He had dreamed of this man and his body every night for
months but could only do it from memory. They could hear voices from
outside the door. Carl pulled on a pair of workout shorts and a t shirt.
Opening the door he heard the nurse say. "He shouldn't be here. This is a
cancer research wing." she said. "I will have you know this is the Durk
wing of this hospital and this patient is a guest of Mr. Durk. It will do
you well to remember your place and that you are only an employee. A
replaceable one at that." the butler said. "Is everything alright ?" Carl
said as he opened the door. "Everything is fine sir. Does Mr. Rexlan need
anything ?" the nurse said. "He is fine but I will be sure to ask for a
different nurse if he does." Carl said. "No need sir I have already taken
care of that." the butler said. Coming back into the room the butler went
through the clothes that he brought and the ones he was collecting.
Turning he smiled at Carl. "Great selection sir. Would you care for the
same tomorrow ?" he asked. "I will be fine but thanks." Carl said. "I
will return parts of this in case its needed." the butler said as he left
the room. "What was that all about ?" Max said. "I guess he realized that
I was commando. My baby likes his commando men." Carl said and winked at
Max.

Max was released from the hospital a couple of days later with strict
orders from the doctor. He was back to about seventy percent with his
rehydration but the doctor wanted him to remain in town for another couple
of days to monitor his kidneys and bowels. They also needed to wait for
the adjustable braces being made for Max's legs. These would need to be
worn for a few weeks anytime he tried to walk. Relaxing and sleeping he
could remove them. Carl had planned on staying at the Hotel but Durk had
other plans. Max and Carl were moved to a guest room at Durk's main ranch
house. Durk came into the room as they got Max settled in the bed. "It is
so nice to finally meet you." Durk said. "I am so sorry for all the
inconvenience." Max said. "Nonsense. You have been a God send. I lay at
night worrying for the last five years what would happen to my passion.
Bringing your husband here to find you has made a dream of mine come true
too." Durk said. "See baby. You are not a bad penny." Carl said. "Quite
the opposite my friend. Because of you I can now sleep at night and know
when my time comes my dream will live on." Durk said.

Carl enjoyed the break. He knew that Max was in good hands but he was able
to go out and look around Durk's operations. Max continued to improve
physically but the pain was just now at a low enough level that he could
think about his emotional and mental state. Carl was careful at night as
he got into bed and held Max. The first night Carl did not say anything
but he stayed awake most of the night just feeling Max's body shake. His
first fear was that Max did not love him but at breakfast when he voiced
his fears the butler let him know that it was quite the opposite. "Sir it
seems to me that Mr. Rexlan is afraid that you don't love him anymore after
what he did and also that he doesn't deserve you." the butler said. "How
can I fix this ?" Carl asked. "Patience. Mr. Max will do this on his
own." the butler said.

Carl and Max lay in bed that night feeling concerned. There were moans and
groans coming from the master suite next door. The walls were well
insulated but they could still hear due to the volume.
"Uuuuggggghhhhh.....Gggggrrrrrrrrrrr......wwheeeww." came a loud sound and
then nothing. Carl got up and opened the door slightly to see if he heard
possible a cry for help. The butler backed his way out of the door slowly
in his robe and turned to walk away. "Oh Mr. Rexlan. Is everything
alright ?" he said. "Just making sure." Carl said and smiled. Forgetting
he was naked the butler looked up and down Carl's body. "Those were the
days. I love my job Mr. Rexlan and the bonuses though less than earlier
years are still worth it." the butler said placing his hand on his own ass
as he winked and walked down the hall. "Sweet dreams." Carl whispered.
"Oh they will be now." the butler said as he entered the door to his room.

The next morning at breakfast Carl blushed as Durk sat down at the table.
"I am guessing that you heard a little more than you expected last night."
Durk said. "I am sorry. I was not trying to ease drop. I was just afraid
something was wrong." Carl said. "It was sir. Mr. Durk is not as nimble
as he use to be and sometimes forgets. He got a cramp." the butler said as
he placed the plates in front of them. "Well I am sure you massaged the
cramp quite nicely." Carl said and smiled. "Oh yes sir. I had to finish
massaging one cramp before I could move to the one that hurt." the butler
said. "Alright you two." Durk said. "Oh I am thrilled. How long have you
two been ...ummm...you know ?" Carl said. "Lovers ? This spring will be
sixty years." he said. "Before you say anything my wife knew about us when
we got married. She was not a sexual person but was very loving. I loved
her very much." Durk said. "She was a grand lady and my best friend." the
butler said. "My question then is why do you sleep in separate bedrooms ?"
Carl asked. "He claims that it is not the butler's position to share the
bed with his boss. " Durk said. "That and he snores and passes too much
gas at night for me." the butler laughed. "Alright you. I can still fire
you." Durk laughed. "No its not that. We grew up in a much different
time. Men that loved men were taken out and horse whipped and possibly
hanged here in Texas. It just seems to work for us." the butler said.

Max's doctor's appointment went well. "I would like for you to stay around
for at least two more days. Your levels are doing well and it looks like
that you can resume your normal sexual activities sooner than I thought.
Possibly by the time you go home." the doctor said. "What are you talking
about ?" Max asked. "Oh so your husband didn't tell you. I told him the
night you were admitted that anal sex would be out of the question for
quite a while. It could kill you." the doctor said. Max had tears in his
eyes. "What's wrong baby ?" Carl asked while he helped Max dress. "I knew
that you had not acted interested. I thought you didn't want to have sex
with me anymore and was just being polite." Max said. "Oh no baby. I
wanted to crawl in bed with you the first night and make love to you to
help reassure you how much I loved you but when the doctor said it could
kill you I freaked out. I had much rather have you with me and alive than
to risk your life by having sex." Carl whispered. For the first time Max
was able to hug Carl and his whole body not tremble in fear.

Max's last appointment with the doctor in Texas went even better than the
doctor had hoped. "Now I want you to go to your personal care physician a
couple of days after you get home. Give him this envelope and then he can
call my office for all of your records. I want you to take it easy. Just
because you have the braces so you can walk I still need you to use a wheel
chair for at least a week if you are going anywhere other than around the
house. As for resuming sex I would ask that you wait at least a couple
more days. I will warn you that since you were so dehydrated and
malnourished that your semen will be thick. It will also probably be very
bitter and maybe even a little yellow. You may even see a hint of blood in
it but that will pass. After four or five ejaculations your system should
be back to normal." the doctor said. "So you will be normal by day two
then." Carl laughed. The doctor just grinned and winked at Max. Thanking
the doctor for all he had done. "Mr. Rexlan if you will follow me to my
office I will give you other information to carry to Max's doctor. While
we do that Max the nurse will bring you the forms you need to sign and also
bring you the Prescription for an antibiotic that I want you to take." the
doctor said.

Once in the office the doctor pointed towards one of the chairs. Carl took
a seat on the other side of the doctor's desk. "I know that you are
excited that you are getting to take him back home but I must warn you.
Max still has a long way to go. Not as much physical as mental at this
point. The physical will heal. One of the doctors that treated Max was a
psychiatrist friend of mine. He said that in his opinion that Max has
conditioned himself over the years to the point of covering his feelings.
He also said that in his opinion Max had an inward nervous break down." the
doctor said. "Inward ?" Carl asked. "Well that's not the technical term
but what it amounts to is that Max has conditioned himself not to show
weakness. Apparently he shuts down inside and just gives in to what's
going on around him. Him shutting down and just agreeing is his fail safe
to keep from having a full blown nervous break down." the doctor said. "I
have seen that. I didn't realize it was that serious though." Carl said.
"Just keep an eye on him. If he seems to do this again get him some help
so he does not feel like his only escape is to flee." the doctor said.
"Would medication help ?" Carl asked. "Max is a very strong man both
physically and mentally. All medication would do is mask the problem. The
talks that he and I have had I feel sure that he will deal with this
himself but it will take a while for him to get back to where he was. Just
remember that for a couple of months at least you need to keep any stress
directed at him at a minimum." the doctor said. "Oh you don't have to
worry about that. Everyone has already been warned." Carl said. "I feel
sure that you will protect him. Just remember. Apparently everyone in his
life has blamed him for their problems. This last incident was the last
straw. What ever happened was so traumatic in his mind that he still
believes they were right. He still feels like he brings nothing but bad
luck and bad things to the ones around him." the doctor said.

Carl and Max lost the argument about transportation home. Durk insisted
that they use his private jet. Durk and his butler would accompany them.
After seeing what Max had been through and realizing how much Carl loved
him Durk felt like it was time for him to step up with his lover before it
was too late. Durk got Carl to help him pack a bag for the butler and for
himself. Once they dropped Carl and Max off Durk planned to travel on to
Ontario as a surprise. They had always talked about visiting there one day
but had never made it.

Mary and Daryl met them at the airport. Mary was the first to hug Max
tight and kiss him on the cheek. Daryl then did the same. As Carl and Max
said their goodbye's to Durk Mary and Daryl sat in the car. "You could
feel his ribs when I hugged him." Daryl said. "I know. Plus his whole
body was trembling when I hugged him. He acted as if he was scared to
death." Mary said. Carl helped Max into the back seat. Thankfully Daryl
talked about the work he had completed on the neighbors house. "Are you
comfortable back there Max ?" Mary asked. Daryl saw the fear in Max's eyes
when he heard his name called. Daryl reached over and squeezed Mary's leg
and shook his head slightly signaling "No". I know where you are headed
and now is not the time. Luckily Mary took the hint and let it drop. She
did get a couple of comments from him when they discussed upcoming events.
Carl's heart sank when they turned in the driveway and Max spotted the new
sign. Max squeezed Carl's hand even tighter and he could feel Max's body
trembling. "Its alright baby. We are home now. Everything is going to be
fine." Carl whispered and leaned over and kissed Max's cheek. "I love you
Carl." Max whispered. "I love my peach too." Carl whispered.

Carl helped Max to the door. "What are you doing ?" Max asked as Carl
leaned down and picked Max up. "Carrying my baby across the threshold."
Carl laughed. "I thought that's what married couples do after the
honeymoon." Max said. "Just practicing baby. Just practicing." Carl
laughed. Once inside Max slowly made his way to the couch. "What do you
guys want for supper ? I am cooking for you two tonight." Mary said. "I
can cook something." Max said. "Not tonight. The kitchen is clean. You
can take over tomorrow." Mary laughed. "Remember she is harder headed than
her younger brother." Daryl laughed. "Watch it." Mary laughed. "Well I
wont argue today. Honestly all of this has taken more out of me than I
thought. I really need to lay down for a little while." Max said. Carl
stood and helped Max up and could feel his body trembling. Finally in the
bedroom Max sat on the side of the bed. "Here baby. Let me help." Carl
said. Max wrapped his arms around his body and lowered his head. "No you
don't baby. I know you have lost a lot of weight but you still have the
hottest body to me in Wyoming." Carl said and lifted Max's head. "I am too
tired to argue." Max laughed. Carl removed the leg braces and helped Max
undress. "Now that's the sight I have been dreaming of for a long time."
Carl whispered. "What is that ?" Max said trying to get comfortable. "The
sexy man I love naked in our bed again." Carl said kissing Max lightly on
the lips.

Back in the living room Daryl and Mary stood waiting on Carl. "Don't worry
Little Bro. Max is still in there." Daryl whispered. "I know he is and I
will do everything necessary to bring him back out." Carl said. "Well we
will get it back out of him." Mary said. "You warn everyone. Anybody and
I mean anybody even look at him cross or open their mouth and say anything
out of line it will be the last breath they ever take. I have seen too
much and learned too much. The doctor said that Max had something like and
internal nervous break down. This shit with messing with his life.... no
our lives stops right now. So warn them all." Carl said. "Calm down
Carl. Everybody wants the same thing." Daryl said. "I am just letting it
be known. Anybody look at Max without a smile on their face and honey on
their tongue will get all of my frustrations right square in their face."
Carl said. "He is home now and we will help anyway we can." Mary said. "I
know you sis and I am warning you. You DO NOT ask him what happened. If
he wants to tell you it will be on his terms. Go it ?" Carl said. "Just
chill." Mary said. "You know he is right honey." Daryl said which got a
stern look from Mary.

Carl walked slowly into the bedroom. Removing his shirt and trying to be
quiet. "You don't have to be so quiet." Max said. "I thought you may be
asleep." Carl said. "No I am a little too achy to sleep. I am sorry. I
over did it today." Max said. "Babe you have no reason to be sorry. What
about a soak in a warm tub ?" Carl asked. "With company ?" Max asked.
"Well Bo is trying his best to get in here." Carl laughed. "As long as he
doesn't splash in the water." Max laughed. "Oh no. Bo has to wait his
turn. The only company in the tub with you this afternoon will be this
cowboy." Carl said as he removed his pants and then his underwear.
