CHAPTER 10
Days quickly passed with Noah settling into a somewhat relaxed routine.
It seemed that the school had nothing for them to do, other than sit and
wait for the rest of this terms students to join. He spent the idle time
with Ben and Kyle, mostly locked up in their room, reading some of the
books they had been given. Their room was considerably more homely now
that both of the boys clothing had arrived, and when he saw the results,
Noah had to admit that the tailor knew his stuff. After watching his
friends try on each and every piece, and then seeing it all fit
perfectly, Noah found it hard not to stare at them with jealousy.
Setting those thoughts aside, Noah turned his attention to the day ahead.
It was the day that the new students would arrive. Jake had disappeared
to help in that endeavour. Meanwhile Noah, Kyle and Ben were a
combination of nerves and curiosity as they tried to predict how the day
would unfold. There were several reasons for this. First and foremost,
there was a high likelihood that other kids would be joining their dorm
today. Second, it meant that their school curriculum was scheduled to
begin tomorrow. And third, it meant that it was finally time to learn
magic!
Noah had been very excited about the prospect of learning magic. From his
time on Overtum so far, he had only dealt with the negative aspect of his
profession. Multiple people had told him the positive aspect was
incredibly powerful, yet he had seen no proof of that thus far.
Classes had apparently carried on for their existing dorm mates and so
the three of them had taken the rare choice to leave their specific room
and linger in the social living space. It meant they could watch
documentaries on the entertainment box and Noah was more than happy to do
so.
Hours passed and Noah was beginning to think they weren't going to be
getting any new dorm mates when the door opened.
"Boys, where are you?" Jake called out after opening the door and
taking a few steps.
"In the living area," Kyle called back.
"Ideal. We have a new kid for you to meet," He explained as he walked
into the living area. "This is Hunter and he is twelve," Jake
announced, stepping aside to reveal the boy that had been hidden behind
him.
"Hi!" The boy announced with a burst of energy. Noah observed the boy.
He seemed more energetic and lively than even Kyle from this brief
introduction and Noah wasn't sure whether that was a good or bad thing.
The boy looked more typical of a twelve year old, being what Noah
considered a more reasonable height and build compared to himself. In
fact, Hunter was clearly the tallest of the four of them.
"Well, introduce yourselves," Jake prompted.
"Right! I am Kyle, the youngster here is Ben and the, um, naked one is
Noah," Kyle said, introducing their group to the new boy.
"why are you naked?" Hunter asked, looking at Noah inquisitively.
"It is a downside of my profession," Noah admitted. "You have a red
bracelet, so you must have a legendary profession?" he asked, not
wanting to deal with that conversation right now.
"I do! I got one called [NOCTURNAL HEALER]" he responded.
"Oh! That was one I was offered. Maybe I should have taken that," Noah
said, regret lacing his words.
"Maybe?" Hunter replied, unsure of what else to say.
"Alright. Introductions are done, great! This is your only addition to
this dorm for the next six months barring any extenuating circumstances.
In terms of available beds, these three only have one bed spare, but they
are also the only people in this dorm that will be in your classes,"
Jake began.
"I will stay with them," Hunter said, not waiting to hear the rest.
"Oh. Well that solves that! Go ahead and get yourself settled in. I
believe there will be an important announcement from the headmaster being
made during dinner. So I will give you a shout so that we can all be in
attendance for that moment. It should be broadcast through each dorms
Entertainment box," Jake said shooing the four of them away.
"Follow us Hunter, we will show you to our room," Kyle said leading the
way.
Two hours later and the three of them had become acquainted. During that
time they had all swapped User Information and Noah had to deal with the
whole penis size conversation again. Unfortunately for Noah, Hunter was
his age and so this particular conversation was that bit more
embarrassing this time.
[User Information received for Hunter]
Name: Hunter Ironclaw
Age: 12
Height: 60 In (5 Feet) | 152 cm
Weight 42 kg | 92 lbs
Hair Colour: Black
Penis Length (Flaccid): 2.4 Inches | 6.1 cm
Penis Length (Erect): 4 Inches | 10.1 cm
Profession: Nocturnal Healer Level 2
In the end, Hunter seemed very understanding and Noah could appreciate
that. Things were complicated enough without having an unpleasant room
mate to deal with.
"Boys, girl, Dinner is almost ready. Get your asses in here please,"
Jake called out.
"Girl?" Hunter asked in shock.
"Yeah... one of the rooms contains a boy and girl. The third room is
just one boy but he is a bit moody," Kyle explained as they walked into
the living area.
Because their dorm still wasn't particularly full, there were enough
seats for everyone to sit and watch the entertainment box without
resorting to sitting on the floor or standing behind the chairs. It made
it a lot easier to eat while waiting for the announcement to start.
A sudden blip on the box was the only indication they needed. Something
was about to happen.
"Alright, I want silence now kids. This is an unusual event, even to
me," Jake said.
Noah looked at Jake in shock. This was a bigger deal than he initially
believed. He had sat down with the assumption that this was a generic
greeting being broadcast for the new students. Kyle, who was sat to his
right, caught Noah's look and was quick enough to pick up on what Noah
had noticed, sharing a concerned look before reverting his gaze to the
box.
"Students of Dreamspire. First I want to welcome all of you who have
joined us today, it is my honour and my privilege to host you in our
esteemed school. Dreamspire has long been a school that has worked by a
simple code, to provide a safe and secure place to learn. However dark
tidings are coming," the headmaster began, a sudden aura seeming to
spill from the entertainment box, creating an uneasy feeling for everyone
watching.
"It has been brought to my attention that our survival as a species is
in great peril. A great force of powerful monsters are on the move. Two
human settlements far to the north have been declared destroyed alongside
all life within. The monsters numbers are great, and worse yet, as I
mentioned before, they show no signs of stopping. In light of this news
we must change our approach to teaching in order to stand a chance of
survival," The headmaster continued.
Noah looked to Kyle and Ben and saw pure fear in their faces. He still
didn't really have a great concept of how dangerous these monsters were
but the news certainly didn't sound good.
"Effective immediately we will be changing the structure of our
school's lessons. Your Dorm tutor will be receiving a data packet
through his system imminently with instructions on how to proceed. Things
will be difficult, but I believe we are up for the challenge. We MUST
ramp up our magical capabilities, and quickly, if we are to fight back
against these monsters. Around the continent, schools of every kind are
beginning to initiate new strategies of their own. This is not an
isolated incident and this WILL be a global effort. In order to increase
our training capabilities, additional dungeons are being manifested and
they will be shared with other combat oriented schools. The use of these
dungeons will be introduced as part of your learning regime once your
tutor deems you capable enough. Instructions will be with your dorm
tutors shortly. Thank you for listening and stay strong. Headmaster Heart
out," the headmaster said, ending his announcement. Once he had finished
speaking, the Entertainment Box blinked back to darkness. The room was
silent. Fear, nerves and uncertainty swirling through the atmosphere as
Noah looked at everyone's faces, taking stock of their reactions.
"Well shit," Jake said, breaking the silence. Ben looked at the man in
shock after hearing a teacher openly swear in front of him.
"What? I think this is a situation more than deserving of some bad
language. I give you full permission to swear to your hearts content for
the next minute," Jake said, looking at the students around him. He
waited for a few moments before seeing that none were taking up that
offer. "No? Fair enough."
"Sir, have you received the data packet?" Emma asked.
"I have," Jake said, not elaborating further.
"Well? What does it say?" Emma insisted, impatience creeping into her
voice.
"It says," Jake began, ignoring Emma's attitude. "Dorm 0001. Due to
the unfortunate circumstance we find ourselves in, we will be
redistributing every member of the school into different dorms. The group
you find yourself with following this directive will become both your new
dorm group and assigned combat team. These have been devised to optimise
the capability we believe a team can achieve. Teams will vary in size
from five members up to twenty, with each team also having at least two
adults accompanying them. The designation for Dorm 0001's students is as
follows: Tyler -- Dorm 0002, Caleb -- Dorm 0003, Emma -- Dorm 0003, Noah
-- Dorm -- 0001, Kyle -- Dorm 0001, Ben -- Dorm 0001 and Hunter -- Dorm
0001. This distribution has taken into account both your duration in
school and your profession tier. Each student within this dorm currently
should know that they will be part of what I consider elite teams,
despite splitting into different groups. Jake..." Jake said, cutting off
at the end as he realised that part of the message was directed at him.
Noah watched in silence as Jake finished reading the message internally.
Once Jake had finished reading it, Noah watched the man lift his
attention back to them, "Tyler, Caleb, Emma it has been a pleasure but
it looks like our time together is over. It would seem I have been
assigned this Dorm once again. Stay safe and keep up the good work I know
the three of you are capable of. Now, if you could please make your way
to your allotted dorm. Your new tutor will have further instructions for
you," Jake said, looking at the three kids he had spent the last six or
more months with.
A quick round of fair wells was given all around, despite only knowing
each other for a week, and then there were just the five of them.
"You guys are stuck with me I'm afraid," Jake said with an apologetic
shrug.
"What did the last part say?" Noah asked inquisitively.
"Nothing much, just that Kyle's dad will be our groups second teacher.
We are also expecting another boy, although they have a complicated
profession, not unlike yourself. Headmaster Heart believes that this boy
will flesh out our group nicely and give us a well rounded set of
capabilities."
"What capabilities are we missing? Kyle and Noah have access to all
magic?" Hunter asked.
"That is a very good question. I am not sure, perhaps it is just an
extra person to further cover core magic? Maybe another healer or a
specialised elemental mage. Considering we know all the legendary and
Unique students, the new boy will be an epic or rare profession at best.
Although, reading between the lines, it may be a profession that is
considered `detrimental'," he admitted.
Noah and his companions spent the next few minutes discussing what they
had heard so far. After a request for further information on what a
Detrimental profession was, Jake elaborated on the term. From Jake's
description, Noah was able to find out that it was only assigned to
professions that were considered unstable or unviable. They were classes
that had serious drawbacks. Noah found that thought very worrying. If
that was to prove the case then they could very well end up with someone
who could be a massive burden to their group.
Jake had also informed them that he had a second data packet but it had
an attached instruction stating that it should only be addressed once
they had received their final member. A knock on the door broke them all
out of that conversation. Jake walked over to the door and opened in to
reveal John.
"Good evening, crazy shit huh?" John said, walking into the dorm.
"That it is," Kyle agreed, reaching out and shaking hands with John.
"Dad!" Kyle shouted, running up to his father for a hug.
"Hi bud," He said, embracing his son and calling Noah over to join
them.
"Hey Noah, you both doing alright?" he asked after he had pulled away
from their brief hug.
"Yeah, we are fine. It sounds scary though. I can't get a thought out
of my head though," Kyle said, causing his father to look at him in
concern.
"Oh? What thought is that?" he asked.
"How does the school have enough teachers to assign two teachers to
every group?" Kyle replied.
A wave of relief flooded through John as he realised it was not something
serious for him to deal with. Instead it was just his son being
inquisitive. Before he could formulate an answer, Jake began speaking.
"We don't. Headmaster Heart is bringing in parents with magical
talents, assuming they aren't in a critical profession already. You can
probably understand the severity of our situation from that statement
alone," Jake replied on John's behalf, knowing he held a piece of the
picture John didn't have. Before he could continue further, the door
knocked again. As John was still close to the door, he was the one that
answered it this time.
"Ah, Hello?" the boy said, unsure what to say or do.
"Hello young man! Are you here to join us or to deliver us a message?"
"Um, to join," the boy replied uncertainly.
"Very well. What is your name and what is your profession?" John
replied, motioning for the boy to enter.
"My name is Arthur and uh, I am a [Pacifist Mage]," he replied with a
lack of confidence.
"A pacifist huh. Interesting," Jake called from deeper in the dorm.
"It seems that the headmaster has indeed thrown another wildcard our
way. That is a Detrimental profession if I am not mistaken Arthur?"
"It is," he replied, looking to the floor in defeat.
"Hey. I will have none of that. You are here with us now and we will
figure out how to make the most of your class, don't you worry!" Jake
said, inspiring some confidence into the boy.
"Jake is right, and besides, you may not realise it, but you have hit
the jackpot kid. Do you realise the significance of the room you have
been assigned to?" John asked, driving Jake's point home.
"Um, no sir?" Arthur replied in puzzlement, looking back up from the
floor in interest.
"Boys, raise your bracelets for Arthur to see," Jake said, seeing where
John was taking this. The boys were more than happy to comply and they
stood, watching in amusement as Arthur's jaw dropped.
"They are all legendary or Unique!" Arthur exclaimed.
"Exactly. If you are here then Headmaster Heart believes you have every
reason to be. Now boys, lets take this conversation to the living area.
We can sort out introductions in a little bit. First, I have a second
missive on my system to review."
Once everyone was seated, Jake read the second message he had received
out loud. "Jake, you should have five boys and John with you now. If you
don't please stop reading until you do. The boys I have assigned to you
are quite possibly the most capable I have seen as a group in a long
time. They are also the smallest team. Tyler's team is the second
smallest and is comprised of eight members whereas Emma and Caleb's is
comprised of ten. Diverting back to your team, my instructions for you
are simple. I am giving you three days to do the following: Create a
guild using the system. This will be the System's official
identification for your group when you become an adventure/combat team in
the near future. Second, I will need you to give the boys a crash course
on the following topics: Monsters 101, Magic 101, System 101 -- including
the sub domains Skills and Achievements, Dungeons 101 and finally
Professions 101. In addition to these core topics, the following will
also need to be covered to ensure our students are educated enough:
Speaking, Reading and Mathematics as well as a course covering puberty,"
Jake read, pausing and looking up to see five flushed faces after hearing
the last part.
Grinning, Jake then continued narrating the message. "Finally I would
like you to encourage Kyle to use his ageless tokens. I am aware it is
not my decision and that it is ultimately Kyle's profession to do with
as he likes, but I strongly believe it is in his best interest. Assuming
you successfully complete all of this within the three days, I would then
like for you and John to begin magical training. I will be sending you
the location for a dungeon that should be suitable for this endeavour as
soon as I have finalised the details. Regards, Heart."
"That is a lot to cover in three days," John mused, thinking of how
they would cram so much stuff in.
"That is not the only problem we have is it," Jake said as he looked
towards Kyle. "How many Ageless tokens do you have?"
"Three," Kyle admitted.
"Yet there are four of us who would need one," Jake confirmed.
"I have already told Kyle not to use one on me. Assuming Hunter and
Arthur are willing, they can take one each and you can take the last one
Jake," John suggested, looking around to see if the kids were willing.
Hunter and Arthur both nodded uncertainly after a short while of
consideration and Jake was more than willing to agree.
"I don't want to use them just yet," Kyle said. He was met with a
collective nod of understanding. They would not pressure him into using
them if he did not want to -- at least for now.
"Any name suggestions?" Jake asked, moving his attention to creating a
guild.
"Well we had a name from a few days ago, perhaps someone can tweak it.
We were thinking of being called the Eternal Three," Noah explained,
scanning his companions faces to figure out what the consensus on the
name was.
"Oh I like that," Jake said, seeing a series of nods in agreement.
"Eternal seven doesn't quite have the same ring to it though. What
could we have to replace seven?" he asked.
"What about the Eternal Wizards?" Arthur suggested.
"Not bad, let's hear a few more ideas though before we decide," Jake
encouraged, trying to generate some creativity.
"Eternal Mages?" Ben called out.
"What about the Eternal Elements?" Arthur suggested again.
"I think I have one. The Perpetual Collective," John said, speaking
out.
"That's perfect!" Noah said, nodding strongly.
"It does have a great sound to it," Jake agreed.
"What does perpetual mean?" Ben asked, then noticed Arthur and Kyle
nodding along.
"It means something that lasts forever. It's pretty much another word
for endless," John explained, seeing a metaphorical light shining above
several of the boys heads as they learned something new.
"Anybody against the name `The Eternal Collective'? If not I will go
ahead and set up the guild on the system," Jake asked, looking around
for any discontent. Seeing no complaints after waiting for several
seconds, he went ahead and set the guild up on the system, inviting the
group one by one.
[Jake has invite you to join the guild `The Eternal Collective'. Accept
this invite?]
Noah agreed, mentally accepting the invite and a slew of information
flashed on his screen.
